TMJ (orig)

The TMJ is the joint that connect the upper jaw, also known as the Maxilla, to the lower jaw, known as Mandible. This joint holds significant importance in the field of dentistry and oral surgery because it enables us to open and close our mouth, move the lower back and forth and sideways, thus allowing us to bite, chew and eat food, speak clearly, and smile. We would not be able to perform any of these functions, which are considered basic, if it wasn’t for this particular joint. This is why it is absolutely important to make sure that the TMJ and its surrounding tissues remain healthy at all times.

Some of the most prominent symptoms of a TMJ disorder include a dull aching pain near the joint which may radiate to the ears or temples, swelling of the soft tissues near the joint, clicking sound in the ear, and limited mouth opening. While the symptoms can be controlled or relieved using muscle relaxants, it is important to diagnose the root cause of the disorder and treat that to keep the joint healthy in the long run.

If you have been experiencing any of the above listed symptoms, you may have a TMJ disorder. Call the team of dentists at Iowa Dental today to schedule a check-up.
